Welcome to the UNC Kenan-Flagler Master of Science in Managament (MSM) Program. Our team believes you’ll be a strong addition to our community. Take the first step to your future educational and professional goals and save your seat in your talented class by submitting your non-refundable enrollment deposit. Your deposit is directly credited to your account, which will apply to your tuition and fees.

Once you submit your deposit, you’ll gain additional access to our world-class resources, including personalized academic guidance and individualized career services.

We strive to be at the forefront of technology for all of our pursuits. We use the University of North Carolina’s “ONYEN” process for your password-related activities. This ensures that your data and information are secure at all times. This is your all-access UNC password. In addition, we’ve eliminated the necessity of multiple passwords by developing the Only Name You’ll Ever Need (ONYEN). Be sure to have your PID number (on your admissions virtual letter) to start the process.

You’ll learn more about academic courses, logistics, and student support. We’ve included nearly everything in this informative guide. This document is updated regularly and the most recent version is available for you. The University of North Carolina is highly accommodating to active duty military, retired military, and military families. Our commitment begins with the admissions process and continues through your engagement as an alumni. So that we can ensure your military benefits are applied as soon as possible, please begin the required VA documentation soon after your admission. The VA website includes highly useful information as an additional resource.

We’ll need the following information:

1. Certificate of Eligibility letter from the VA
2. Request for Change of Program or Place of Training form, available on va.gov (if you’ve previously used VA benefits at a different education institution)
3. Complete the UNC MSM Enrollment Data Form after you have officially registered for your first term courses.

To maintain a high level of academic integrity, we require that all official undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) transcripts are submitted to us before the first day of a credit-bearing course. You may provide official paper or official electronic transcripts.

*Please note that transcripts sent to us from your personal email are not considered official. If you are using an electronic service to send transcripts, make sure you have them sent directly to MSM Admissions.

International Transcripts:

If you studied outside of the United States, you must have a college-level education equivalent to an American undergraduate or baccalaureate degree. If the original language of the academic record and diploma is not English, please submit a certified English translation with the original document.

How to send your transcripts:

For electronic requests, select “third party” and use msm_admissions@kenan-flagler.unc.edu for the email address. Transcripts sent to any other email address (i.e. graduate admissions) won’t be received by the MSM Program.

As a business student, you know the value of smart financial decisions. The MSM program is certainly a wise investment, and we want to enable you to set the right financial foundation. In addition to financial aid, remember the plentiful alternative sources of funding, including external scholarships.

Nearly all MSM students apply for financial aid to help pay tuition, fees, and living expenses. Like a company that seeks financing to build a more efficient and productive plant, you’ll likely use financing to invest in your future.

As you begin to think about starting the MSM Program, you may have questions about tuition and financial aid. This page will help answer these for you.

Tuition and fees are not finalized until the summer but you can find our best estimates for these costs. There are several payment options available, including an installment payment plan.

If you will borrow loan funding for your MSM studies, consider the following:

• Financial aid covers only the estimated cost of attendance (or “financial aid budget”), which includes tuition and fees as well as living expenses. Some online students borrow for living expenses while others do not. This is completely up to you. Keep in mind your loan debt. If you don’t need living expenses covered, don’t borrow too much. Financial aid includes merit-based fellowships, external scholarships, and student loans.
• Have realistic expectations—financial aid enables students to attain a degree and is not an unlimited supply of money.
• Be aware that your student loan choices will affect your lifestyle choices for many years. Think about repayment now so you can save money later.
• Private student loans are credit-based, non-federal student loans. Although you may choose to borrow private loans, each student must choose the loan that best suits their individual situation. You can research private education loan lenders to determine if a private loan is best for you by using our database (called ELMSelect) of lenders UNC Chapel Hill students have used in the past.
• Tuition is charged twice during your program; Fall and Spring. tuition is due mid-August for fall and mid-January for spring.

If you will borrow loan funding for your MSM studies, start working on the following:

• U.S. citizen/permanent resident students who would like to borrow Federal student loan funding should complete the FAFSA electronically using their FSA ID. Do not pay to submit the FAFSA (remember: it is the “free” application for federal student aid) and be wary of any site that charges a “fee” (like fafsa.com, for example). Kenan-Flagler Business School does not have a separate FAFSA school code, so be sure to use UNC Chapel Hill’s code: 002974.
• Once the FAFSA is submitted the Financial Aid Office will reach out to you about viewing and accepting your loan(s) along with any other needed documents.
• International students can research private education loan lenders to determine if a private loan is best for you by using our database (called ELMSelect) of lenders UNC Chapel Hill students have used in the past

Residency Seekers:
You should submit the current residency application as soon as possible, but no later than a month before the program starts.

When should you apply for residency?
Once you have maintained a domicile continuously in North Carolina for at least 12 full months.

How do I know if I am qualified for in-state tuition?
You will receive an unverified determination directly from Residency Determination Services (RDS) once you complete the application. RDS will confirm information provided and will verify information within 24-72 hours.

The unique backgrounds of our student population, faculty, staff, and partners represents an important facet of our program. We strive to create an inclusive and representative Community that welcomes all backgrounds and experiences.

We recognize that International Students (including those without Permanent U.S. Work Authorization)  may have additional process steps related to enrollment. Therefore, we have additional resources available to you:

1. Review your Connect Carolina “To Do” list for your specific action items.
2. Read an email you will receive from The University of North Carolina approximately three days after your admission notification (includes link to the Financial Certificate form).
3. Consult the useful UNC International Student and Scholar Services website.
4. Connect with our dedicated international student representative Jessica Larsen for specific guidance.

An engaging Orientation program will set the foundation for your education. You’ll get to know your classmates, learn more about the curriculum, prepare for your job search, and explore skills essential to success in graduate school. Orientation is required for all students. You will also participate in a 1.5 credit course during your Orientation week: Leadership, Teams, and the Power of Community.

MSM Class of 2026 Orientation begins on Monday, August 11, 2025.

Students will have access to an online orientation course in early June.

We have a dedicated registrar in the MSM Program, so you will be automatically registered for your classes to ensure a streamlined process for you.

Our courses are fast paced so that you gain the highest return on your education. You’ll want to be prepared on your first day of class. Therefore, we recommend that you order your textbooks prior to your classes. Details on how to access your course materials will be provided in the weeks leading up to Orientation.

The MSM Program is a part of the University of North Carolina. This status enables us to have access to their resources and services. UNC has created “Connect Carolina” to provide you with an integrated portal to unlock system-wide benefits. In addition, you’ll pay your tuition through Connect Carolina.

The Connect Carolina portal includes an important “to-do” list with logistical items that you’ll need to complete. Although you may not need to complete anything right now, you should refer back to the Connect Carolina “to-do” list regularly as you approach the start date of our program to ensure you don’t miss any important action items. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill utilizes the Office365 application suite. As a UNC Chapel Hill student, you can download the Office365 application suite to your personal computer at no cost. Click this link to access the software.

Students must have access to a Windows-based machine running Windows 10 or later during their time in the program. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, since these applications will be used frequently in the program. If you’re not familiar with these programs or need to brush up on some skills, you can access courses through LinkedIn Learning. You’ll use your UNC ONYEN credentials to access LinkedIn Learning.

The UNC student ID card is named the “OneCard.” Your OneCard will open a wide array of resources to you. You can use your One Card for printing, dining, and many other services. It provides you access to the McColl Building at Kenan-Flagler Business School beyond the normal operating hours. In addition, you can use this card for discounts at many Chapel Hill retailers! More details on how to obtain your UNC One Card will be provided in the online Orientation course in early June.
