Heidi Schultz’s teaching and research interests focus on storytelling to influence and inspire, the relationship between rhetorical patterns and writing quickly, communicating with data and the impact of music on confidence in high-stakes presentations.
She teaches storytelling for professional contexts as well as business presenting and business writing. In 2021, Dr. Schultz created the podcast, “Stories from the Hill,” which features some of the stories what have come out of the classes she teaches (bit.ly/StoriesFromTheHill).
She was awarded the Fulbright Scholar Award to teach storytelling at the Technical University of Chemnitz in Germany in 2023.
An award-winning teacher, Dr. Schultz received the Business School’s Weatherspoon Award for Excellence Undergraduate Teaching, and she and her MBA@UNC teaching team won the Team Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. She was recognized in Poets & Quants as one of the favorite professors of the Executive MBA Class of 2020.
She is the author of three books: “Master Connect: Business Communication” (McGraw-Hill, 2024), “The Elements of Electronic Communication” (Allyn & Bacon, 2000) and “Business Scenarios: A Context-Based Approach to Business Communication”(McGraw-Hill, 2005).
Dr. Schultz was instrumental in founding the Management and Corporate Communication area and served as its chair for 16 years. She started the Business Communication Center in 1997, which has grown to serve the communication needs of all UNC Kenan-Flagler students.
In 2014, Schultz formed BlackInkMetrics, an educational software company which develops innovative assessment solutions to serve the needs of writing instructors and their students.

She is the former director of the Writing Center at UNC-Chapel Hill.
She received her PhD from UNC-Chapel Hill, her MA from UNC Charlotte and her BA from Lenoir-Rhyne College.
