Professor Shimul Melwani

When Professor Shimul Melwani finished graduate school, she had three goals: to be a successful researcher, a successful teacher and a good citizen.

Check. Check. And Check.

Melwani is one of 25 Carolina faculty members and graduate teaching assistants recognized with a 2025 University Teaching Award, honoring those who “demonstrate the depth and scope of Carolina’s commitment to teaching and mentoring,” Chancellor Lee H. Roberts and Provost J. Christopher Clemens wrote. “Not every outstanding teacher receives an award, but each award winner this year undoubtedly represents the best of what Carolina has to offer.”

She is among four educators honored with a Chapman Family Teaching Award that includes a $30,000 stipend for course development and research over five years. Melwani, an organizational behavior professor and associate dean of the Undergraduate Business Program, plans to use the funds to expand access to an introductory leadership course for all undergraduate business majors and create more opportunities for students to develop personal leadership skills outside of the classroom through service projects.

“Shimul consistently goes above and beyond for our students despite her significant administrative and research responsibilities,” says Dean Mary Margaret Frank (BSBA ’92, MAC ’92, PhD ’99). “This well-deserved recognition highlights her transformative teaching and the lasting impact she has on our students and community.”

“Teaching at Carolina has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” writes Melwani. “My teaching has been driven by a single mission: to create spaces where students feel seen, challenged and empowered to make a difference — not just in their careers, but in their lives and the world.”

Ritch Allison Domino'sRitch Allison joins Board of Trustees

Richard “Ritch” Allison (BSBA ’85, MBA ’95) was appointed to the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees. Allison, the CEO of Domino’s Pizza Inc. from 2018 to 2022, had served on UNC Kenan-Flagler’s board since 2014 and became its chair in 2023.

“As someone who is so deeply passionate about Carolina, I am humbled and honored to have this opportunity to continue to give back to the University,” he said.

Allison and his wife, Susan (BA ’89), both first-generation college students, established the Richard and Susan Allison Assured Admit Scholarship Fund in 2017, as well as the Allison Mentorship Program. Both support underrepresented students, including first-generation students and those majoring or minoring in business.

Two of the Allisons’ children are UNC Kenan-Flagler alumni: Jake (BA ’18, MAC ’19) and Emily (BSBA ’20). In 2024, the Allisons gave $50,000 to the Carolina Student Impact Fund in support of those affected by Hurricane Helene.

Professor Anusha Chari

Very presidential

Professor Anusha Chari rang in 2025 in a particularly memorable way. As a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), she visited the White House to present the group’s final report to President Joe Biden days before he left office. Chari wrote chapter six of the council’s report, which analyzed global economic trends and their impact on the economy.

The CEA is a key part of a president’s economic team. With expertise in international economics and finance, Chari led efforts to track financial markets, assess emerging risks in the global economy and provide insights that helped shape critical policy decisions.

Serving the country under the Biden-Harris administration was an honor and a privilege,” said Chari. “The experience was both intellectually stimulating and deeply rewarding. I am excited to bring my learning back to Carolina — enriching my research and inspiring the next generation in the classroom.”
