Choosing the Right Recommenders for Your MBA Application

The different aspects of your MBA application serve as a narrative that paints a compelling picture of your professional journey and long-term aspirations. Central to this narrative is your letter of recommendation, offering a unique perspective that compliments your essays and resume. Selecting the right recommender can significantly enhance the impact of that aspect of your application.

As you consider who should serve as your recommender, here are some helpful tips. When you’re ready to apply, you’ll need to only supply the name and contact information for one recommender – they’ll be sent a recommendation form to complete.

1. Prioritize relevance over title

Who completes your recommendation is only as valuable as what they can say about you that lends depth to your application. Focus on selecting a recommender who knows you well and can provide specific examples of your skills and achievements. A direct supervisor who has worked closely with you is often the ideal choice, as they can speak to your day-to-day performance and growth.

2. Align your narrative

Ensure your recommender can reinforce the qualities you’ve highlighted in your application. Provide them with your resume, a summary of your career goals, and key talking points to guide their feedback. This helps them align their insights with the narrative you’re presenting to the admissions committee.

3. Choose someone who supports your MBA goals

Select a recommender who understands and values the significance of an MBA. Whether they have earned an MBA themselves or appreciate its impact on career growth, their endorsement will carry more weight in showcasing your readiness for the challenges of business school.

In order to submit your application, you’ll need one professional letter of recommendation, preferably from a supervisor (past or present) or someone who can speak to your strengths at work. We will accept one additional endorsement letter to support your application from a colleague, faculty member, UNC alumni, or current MBA student – but this is not required.

4. Collaborate effectively

Engage your recommenders early and clearly outline the MBA program’s requirements and deadlines. Offer insights into projects or experiences you’d like them to highlight. A collaborative approach ensures they understand your aspirations and can articulate them convincingly.

Bonus tip: Don’t be afraid to check in with your recommender to ensure they have received and completed the recommendation form. Then, send them a thank you for their time and effort!

5. Ensure they convey genuine enthusiasm

Seek recommenders who genuinely believe in your potential and are enthusiastic about your MBA candidacy. Their enthusiasm will shine through in their letters, making a compelling case for your admission.

“Recommenders' feedback is like the final puzzle piece in the application and invaluable in our assessment of MBA applicants. Alongside test scores, professional history, career goals, and essays, it completes the picture, helping us understand your potential for success in our MBA program.”
