UNC Kenan-Flagler offers an MBA energy program, unique among major business schools, that allows you to explore every aspect of the energy value chain – from oil and gas to power, petrochemicals and renewables.

Courses focus on day-to-day business and economic situations unique to the energy industry and address challenges faced by specific industry segments. Energy Faculty

Our Energy Concentration courses are taught by practitioners with experience in specific segments of the industry, including major international energy firms and power, finance and consulting. Additionally, many have taught at business or law schools or in business-specific training programs.

UNC Kenan-Flagler Energy Center

The Energy Center promotes sound energy public policy to achieve a Feasible Energy Transition. We do this through balanced programming, unbiased research and career placement across the energy value chain. We enhance the student experience through career-focused events and conferences, research assistantships, curriculum development, internship assistance, and access to faculty and industry professionals.

MBA Career & Leadership

Two dedicated associate career directors are focused on energy. One works directly with students to prepare them for successful careers in energy, while the other develops relationships with top firms across all segments of the energy industry so that students can apply to a wide array of roles.

Energy Club

The Energy Club is a forum for students to gain exposure to the energy industry and an opportunity to practice leadership around energy issues. This student-led organization organizes educational events and conferences, case competitions and career treks to provide students with experiential learning and networking opportunities with industry and alumni.

Energy Industry Conferences

The Energy Center hosts unique industry conferences, which are invitation only and conducted to promote open dialogue. Recents events include: Meeting the Renewables Intermittency Challenge, Emerging Technologies for Carbon Capture Utilization/Sequestration, and Electric Vehicles – Carbon Footprints, Grid Impacts and Likely Pace of Adoption. Energy MBA students help organize and participate in these events.

Select Experiential Learning Opportunities

Experience-Based Teaching

All courses use cases based upon the operations and deals of energy companies. Faculty use cases and problem sets they wrote based on transactions encountered in their careers as the method for teaching how to apply the MBA skill set to energy issues.

National Case Competitions

Teams of MBA students represent UNC Kenan-Flagler at premier MBA energy case competitions, such as the UCLA Challenges in Energy Case Competition. These competitions provide students with a chance to apply their industry and business knowledge and to network with peers and professionals from across the United States.

Energy Center Student Research

The Center offers students cutting-edge research projects on topics related to each year’s Energy Conference, where students present their results to industry leaders. Past studies include: “The All-In Cost of Renewables as Base Load Power” and “The Value of Regulatory Certainty for New Nuclear Plants” and “Comparing Life Cycle Carbon Footprints of Battery Electric Vehicles, Plug-in Hybrids and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles.”

Clean Tech Summit

Co-hosted by the Center for Sustainable Enterprise and the Energy Center, this annual summit welcomes over 1,000 industry professionals, academics and government representatives to discuss the clean tech and the Energy Transition. This past March the Energy Center facilitated two panels on nuclear power’s role in the Transition and two more on carbon capture.
