Finland, Estonia, Sweden: Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital in Northern Europe

The Global Immersion Elective (GIE) to Finland, Estonia, and Sweden will expand your global business knowledge, expose you to leadership challenges, and provide deep project-based experience. As part of a cross-cultural team, you will support a local startup in their go-to-market strategy for the US.

Your journey will begin with classes and virtual teamwork as preparation for your visit to Helsinki, Tallinn, and Stockholm in May. While in these innovative capitals, you will collaborate with local university students, explore the cities, and engage in company visits. You will work in teams to consult with local startups, offering solutions that could impact their US market entry, with presentations made during the in-country portion of the program.

Finland, Estonia, and Sweden are home to some of the most advanced and successful startup ecosystems globally, having produced unicorns like Supercell, Skype, and Spotify. These countries are not only leaders in innovation but also trailblazers in sustainable development, digital transformation, and green energy solutions. Each nation consistently ranks among the top globally for quality of life, business transparency, and innovation.

Throughout this program, you will acquire high-demand skills such as cross-cultural collaboration, leadership, and adaptability. The immersive experience will help you navigate the unique cultural and business environments of Northern Europe while providing hands-on experience with real-world business challenges. Finland, Estonia, and Sweden’s recent closer ties with the US via NATO membership also present exciting opportunities for future business partnerships and innovations in various industries.

William Cardwell, Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurship at UNC Kenan-Flagler, will lead this immersion. With extensive experience as a venture capitalist and a portfolio of over 40 companies, his expertise will guide you in understanding the ecosystem dynamics and strategic market expansion.

“The GIE I participated in for Finland and Estonia remains one of the most life-changing experiences during my time at UNC. Since then, I’ve returned to Helsinki three times, built lifelong friendships, and even worked for a Finnish-Estonian startup. Despite working across different continents, I continue to be drawn to the entrepreneurial scene in this region.”
— Devin Hanaway, COO & Co-Founder @ Otto.Rentals, 2016 GIE participant
