This COIL+ global immersion course provides a deep dive into how Malaysia advances sustainability through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Focusing on key goals such as affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), climate action (SDG 13), and sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), you will explore the country’s dynamic approach to sustainable development in both urban and rural settings.
This course is uniquely partnered with two international universities: Kansai University (KU) in Japan and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Malaysia. You will build relationships with Malaysian and Japanese students via a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL+) course before departure and will continue that engagement during our immersion in Malaysia in March. The course builds towards an in-country team project that assesses Malaysia’s innovative solutions while enhancing your cross-cultural collaboration skills.
This course emphasizes experiential learning through site visits to the SDG Centre in Kuala Lumpur and the Putrajaya Corporation, where you will learn about Malaysia’s initiatives in sustainability and the implementation of SDG-related activities. You will also engage in hands-on activities, such as workshops highlighting global sustainability challenges, leadership and branding efforts, and interactive discussions on how Malaysia navigates the complexities of rapid industrialization while striving for environmental balance.
Malaysia is the ideal setting to explore sustainability in action. As one of Southeast Asia’s most culturally diverse and economically vibrant countries, Malaysia is at the forefront of sustainable development, balancing rapid urbanization with environmental conservation. From its lush rainforests and rich biodiversity to its bustling, tech-savvy cities like Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia offers a unique blend of tradition and innovation. Its commitment to achieving the SDGs is visible in initiatives that span sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and smart city planning.
By the end of the program, you will have developed a deep understanding of Malaysia’s role in addressing global sustainability challenges. You will gain practical skills in intercultural communication and insights into sustainable business practices that can be applied to international contexts.
Dr. Kimberley Williams, Clinical Assistant Professor in Management and Corporate Communication, will lead this COIL+ program.
This is a unique program that is partially sponsored by the Japan Hub for Innovative Global Education (JIGE). Many of the in-country logistics of this program are subsidized by JIGE; therefore, there are a limited number of students we can admit to this program.
